How to remove the AI label from an Instagram post
Instagram adds AI info when it finds AI metadata in your file. Why the label appears, what the toggle controls, and how to post a clean photo or Reel.

Short answer. Instagram adds the AI label in two situations: you switched the AI label on yourself, or the file carries AI metadata (C2PA Content Credentials or an IPTC "AI generated" tag) that Instagram reads when you upload. The automatic label cannot be switched off on a post that is already up. The fix is to remove the metadata from the file and post it again. The image remover does that in one step, and the first file is free.
Why Instagram put the label on your post
Instagram's "AI info" label (it launched as "Made with AI" in 2024 and was renamed a few months later) comes from one of three places:
- You added it. The post composer has an AI label toggle in its advanced settings. Once a post is published with it on, the label stays.
- The file told Instagram. Meta reads industry-standard AI indicators inside the file: C2PA Content Credentials and the IPTC digital source type field. Generators such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Adobe Firefly and Meta AI write these, and so do editing apps when you use their AI features. Photoshop's generative tools write Content Credentials even when the photo itself came from a camera.
- A reviewer flagged it. Meta asks you to disclose realistic AI content and can label content on its own. This is rare for ordinary posts, and nothing in the file changes it.
The first two cover almost every "why did Instagram label my photo" complaint, and both are about the file.
Step 1: find out which one you are dealing with
Open the post on your own account. If it says "AI info" and you never touched the toggle, the file is the reason. You can confirm that in a few seconds with the free AI label checker: drop the original image or video in and it lists the Content Credentials, the AI source tag and any generator names it finds. Nothing is uploaded; the check runs on your device.
A camera's own Content Credentials (recent Pixel phones, Samsung's Galaxy AI edits and some Sony, Nikon and Leica bodies sign their files) are not an AI label on their own. Instagram labels a post when the credentials or the IPTC field say the image was generated or edited with AI.
Step 2: remove the AI metadata from the file
Deleting the post does not change the file. Reposting the same export triggers the same label, because the metadata is still inside it. You need a copy without it.
Three ways, from worst to best:
| Method | Removes the label? | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshot the image | Usually, because a screenshot carries no AI metadata | Resolution and quality. Fine for a Story, poor for a feed post |
| Re-export from another app | Sometimes. Many apps copy the XMP and C2PA data across | Time, and you still have to check the result |
| Strip the metadata and re-save | Yes, once the C2PA manifest and the IPTC and XMP fields are gone | Nothing you can see |
For the third option, drop the image into the image remover. It removes the C2PA manifest and every AI tag in EXIF, IPTC and XMP, then re-saves the file as a JPEG with camera metadata from a real iPhone model. The pixels get an invisible variation (a one to five percent zoom, a tiny color shift, a touch of grain), so the file is also new to Instagram's duplicate matching. Up to 20 images go through at once, which covers a carousel. Videos go through the video remover the same way.
Run the result through the checker again if you want proof before you post. It should show no AI signals and an iPhone as the camera.
Step 3: post it again
Delete the labeled post, upload the clean file, and leave the AI label toggle off. Instagram reads metadata at upload time, so a file with none gets no automatic label.
Posts and carousels
Every slide in a carousel is checked. One AI-tagged image among ten still labels the whole post, so clean the full set. Batch upload handles that in one run.
Reels
Video files carry the same signals in different places: a C2PA box inside the MP4 or MOV container, and tool names in the QuickTime metadata. Sora, Veo, Runway and Kling all write them. The video remover takes them out and, because it re-encodes the file with small timing and zoom changes, the Reel also gets a fresh fingerprint.
Stories
Stories follow the same rules. Because they are small and gone in a day, a screenshot or a clean export both work; the clean export keeps the quality.
What you should not expect
- The label on an existing post cannot be turned off. Not in the app, not on the web, not through support. Reposting a clean file is the only route.
- Clean metadata does not make a post immune. Meta's rules ask you to disclose realistic AI content, and reviewers can add a label. If the content is photorealistic AI of a real-looking event, the honest move is to label it yourself.
- Visible watermarks stay. The sparkle Gemini draws into the corner of an image is part of the picture, not metadata. Removing metadata does not touch it. See the Gemini watermark guide.
FAQ
How do I remove the AI label on an Instagram Story?
Stories follow the same rule as posts: the label comes from AI metadata in the file or from your own disclosure. Save a copy of the image without the metadata and post that. The image remover does one Story image free.
Does deleting the post and reposting remove the AI label?
Only if the file changed. The same export carries the same Content Credentials, so the same label comes back. Remove the metadata first, then repost.
Why does Instagram label a real photo I edited in Photoshop?
Photoshop writes Content Credentials when you use its generative AI tools, and some versions attach them to every export while the feature is on. Instagram reads that as an AI edit. Strip the credentials from the export and the label goes.
Does the AI info label hurt reach?
Meta has not published numbers. Many creators report that labeled posts are shown to fewer people and get fewer saves, which is why the label matters to people who only used AI for a small edit. Treat it as a signal you control through the file.
Is removing the AI label allowed?
You can edit files you own or have the rights to. Each platform has its own disclosure rules for realistic AI content, and you are responsible for following them where they apply.
